  • A Legendary Coffee Company (6/27/2008)
For the last 15 years, Salt Lake City-based Bad Ass Coffee Company of Hawaii has been stirring up the retail coffee niche like no other. Not just a clever name, the company derives its moniker from the donkeys used to carry the Kona coffee up and down the Hawaiian mountainside where the coffee was grown.

  • Stores Set the Stage For Growth (6/19/2008)
All the world’s a stage at Stage Stores, Inc., the department store chain based in Houston, Texas. The company operates stores under the Bealls Department Store, Palais Royal and Stage banners. (It also operates stores under the Peebles name, but those stores do not report to this office.) There are currently has been around a while, The ultimate goal of Stage Stores, Inc., is to expand to 1,000 locations throughout the United States, but for now the retailer is satisfied with adding 70 stores annually over each of the next four years.

  • Flowing Expansion Plans (6/13/2008)
It has come to my attention that recently Amazon Systems, LLC closed most of its stores, and is planning on closing the remaining few in the near future. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused, and thanks to those who helped bring this to my attention.

  • Fashionable Expansion (6/6/2008)
The largest school uniform manufacturer and supplier in the southern United States is on the move. Young Fashions serves over 1,000 parochial and private schools across the country by supplying them with a wide selection of high-quality uniform apparel at very competitive prices. Young Fashions offers pants, shirts and oxfords for boys, and jumpers, dresses, skirts and blouses for girls.

  • Get in the Game (5/23/2008)
Since 1937, Dunham’s Athleisure has been bringing its commitment to quality and value to the communities it serves. Dunham’s stores carry an extensive selection of athletic apparel, equipment and footwear, making it a one-stop shop for sports enthusiasts.

  • That Crazy Chicken is At It Again (5/16/2008)
Although the company's headquarters is now in Irvine, California, the El Pollo Loco legacy began in 1975 as a small roadside grill in the small city of Guasave, Mexico.

  • The Gilded One (5/8/2008)
The three-generation old business, El Dorado Furniture Corp., actually traces its roots back to the 1920s in Cuba. Simon Capo used to trade used farm equipment for used furniture, which he would later restore and sell. He eventually made enough to own five furniture stores in Cuba called Casa Capo, but these were taken away when Castro came to power. The family decided to sail to Mexico and seek political asylum in the United States. They later opened up their store, named after the boat they sailed in on, El Dorado. Today, the company owns 10 stores in Florida, and sees expansion on the horizon.

  • Betting the Whole Farm (5/2/2008)
The Bob Evans legacy began in a tiny diner in Gallipolis, Ohio in 1948, where Bob Evans himself would feed truckers his homemade sausage. His customers would frequently tell Bob that it was the best sausage they’ve ever had, and would take it home by the pound. Bob’s sausage became so popular that in 1953 Bob Evans Farms was created to help supply the demand. Soon, that small diner became what is today a 134-seat restaurant.

  • I Wish They All Could Be California Tortillas (4/25/2008)
Funny enough, the California Tortilla Group doesn’t operate any of its locations in its namesake state. The company specializes in its own brand of Tex-Mex using only the freshest ingredients at a great price. California Tortilla also caters to the vegetarian and vegan crowds, and has weekly specials such as ‘Monday Night Mystery Prize Burrito Wheel,’ ‘Pop Tart Day,’ and ‘Freeze Pop Day.’ The company prides itself on offering a unique, fun, value-packed meal option and is looking to expand beyond its current states of operation.

  • Expansion Plans Are Brewing (4/18/2008)
Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch shared a dream – a restaurant with exceptional beer and a superb, fresh menu – and that dream became a reality when the first Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant opened in 1988. Since the merger with Big River Brewing Company in 1999, the company has grown to 38 restaurants under the Big River Grill & Brewery, Ragtime Tavern & Restaurant, Rock Bottom Brewery, Seven Bridges Grill & Brewery, A1A Alehouse and, of course, Gordon Biersch Brewing Co.

  • Cash, Plus Some (4/11/2008)
Wire transfers, money orders, check cashing and payday advance loans are Cash Plus Inc.’s specialty, but those services aren’t what separates the company from other financial services chains. By offering a customer reward program, the BravoKids initiative and many other unique programs, Cash Plus Inc. has redefined the financial services industry. In fact, the way Cash Plus does business is so unique that the company was recently recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine as the only financial services chain in its top 500 franchises. The company currently operates 89 locations in the United States and Canada, and hopes to add 30 stores in 2008, 45 in 2009, 60 in 2010 and 100 more in 2011.

  • Department of the Interior (Design) (4/4/2008)
Due to a slowing economy, the retail industry has surely seen brighter days, but the retail coffee segment still seems to be growing. While chains like Starbucks reportedly struggle to stay at the top of an increasingly-competitive coffee market, other chains are expanding and gaining more ground while offering gourmet brews at lower prices. Cuppy’s Coffee & More, LLC, based in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is one coffee chain that is expanding and enjoying the recent rise in popularity that Starbucks has given to coffeehouses worldwide.

  • More Cuppy's Coffee On the Way! (4/4/2008)

  • Serving It Up (3/20/2008)
Previously known as Flamers Charburgers, FranServeUS, LLC has come to be known for much more than just its Flamers franchise. The company also operates Central Park Drive Through, Lil Dino’s, obee’s Subs, Oh Oh Burrito, Wing Way and Sobik’s Sandwich Shops in 21 states, Puerto Rico and Mexico, as well as one location in Egypt and three in the Philippines. The fast casual veteran operates 270 overall, and there are 100 obee’s locations either open or in development right now making obee’s the company’s largest operation today.

  • Kona Grill On Fire! (3/16/2008)
One look at the menu at Kona Grill and images of lush vegetation, volcanoes and grass skirts come to mind, but surprisingly the restaurant chain is based in Scottsdale, Arizona – not Hawaii. Unique offerings such as macadamia nut chicken, sweet Maui onion rings, sushi and Hawaiian pizza keep customers coming back for more at this one-of-a-kind, Asian-inspired American restaurant. The atmosphere is almost as enticing as the menu, with each restaurant housing a 2,000-gallon saltwater aquarium.

  • Bandanarama (3/7/2008)
Bandana’s specialty is southern-style BBQ, but this chain does it differently than many other chains: all menu items are prepared “from scratch” every day. This really sets Bandana’s apart from the larger casual dining chains. The pork, beef, chicken and ribs are smoked over a hardwood fire, creating the distinctive Bandana’s flavor. The company prides itself on smoking its pork butts for 14 hours, which puts a “smoke line” on the meat – a reddish color indicative of perfectly-smoked, moist cuts. The restaurants also offer all the sides you’d expect from a “southern-style” restaurant to offer - Bar-B-Q beans, coleslaw, potato salad, fried corn, green beans or baked potato.

  • Smells Like A Winner (2/29/2008)
The inescapable aroma of Perfumania is coming to a mall near you, if it isn’t there already. The fragrance retailer has ambitious expansion plans to open 50 stores this year, 75 next year, and 100 in 2010. This expansion comes after a tumultuous history for the retailer, which has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the last couple decades. However, since 1999, when the company entered the world of e-commerce with www.perfumania.com, the company has seen new life. Today, there are 292 stores under the Also Perfumania, Class Perfumes, Perfumania, Perfumania Plus, Perfumania Too and Touch by Perfumania banners in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

  • Just the Right Fit (2/15/2008)
It must feel good to be in Felts' shoes. The shoe chain, currently operating eleven stores in Oklahoma and Arkansas, is a fixture in the town of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where it is based. Founded in 1978, Felts Family Shoe Stores has added one store every two years since, but has laid out plans to step that number up over the next few years. The private shoe retailer hopes to open one new store in each of the next four years, which would bring its total number of stores to 15. In the meantime, it hopes to remodel three stores per year for the next three years.

  • Expansion Has a Nice Ring to It (2/1/2008)
As "America's Premier Family-Owned Jeweler," Hannoush Jewelers has committed itself to conduct business with integrity and respect for the customer. This commitment has brought great success to the company, which has been around for almost 28 years. Since 1980, Hannoush Jewelers has built quite a chain of stores that spans much the United States. Currently operating 66 Hannoush Jewelers, seven Harsten Jewelers, two Goldstein Swank & Gordon locations and one Lenox Jewelers location, the company has added an average of about three stores per year since its inception. The company told us that it plans to open another three stores this year, which will keep it on its steady expansion track.

  • Even Brighter Days Ahead (1/25/2008)
Back in 1996, Jeff Newman, Richard Danker and Robert Garner opened the first Glory Days Grill in Burke, Virginia. Their plan was to open a neighborhood sports-themed restaurant, a concept that quickly evolved into a family-friendly, casual dining destination. Sports memorabilia and artifacts still grace the walls of the cozy restaurants, hence the name Glory Days, and is an environment the whole family can enjoy. The chain offers standard American fare, including chicken wings, nachos, salads, fried seafood, burgers, barbecue and an extensive childrens menu.

  • 99 Restaurants and Counting (1/18/2008)
The successful chain we know today as 99 Restaurant & Pub began as a single casual dining restaurant in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1952. Founder Charlie Doe had a fresh idea New Englanders had yet to experience; he wanted to provide a friendly, comfortable place for friends to gather and enjoy great food and great drink at an affordable price. Today, the company operates 117 American-fare restaurants throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. “A Passion to Serve” is the company motto, and it has been backing up with reliable, friendly service for 55 years. However, the company has not slowed down one bit and hopes to add more stores this year.

  • More For Less! (1/11/2008)
As fashion trends come and go, there is one reliable source that keeps us in the loop, and for a reasonable price to top it off. The first Styles For Less store opened in 1992, but today the discount apparel chain operates over 100 stores in Arizona, California and Florida. Styles For Less carries the contemporary fashions of coats, shoes, dresses, sweaters and accessories for women, sometimes at discounts of up to 75 percent off department store prices. The company is dedicated to offering its customers the highest-quality fashions at the lowest price anywhere. Styles For Less stores also provide a high-energy, fun shopping environment complete with a hip soundtrack.

  • AIMing For More Stores (1/4/2008)
"Need to know how to ship aardvarks to Alabama or zithers to Zurich?" According to the Amailcenter Franchise Corporation's website, this company can help. The 20 year-old company based in Irvine, California offers a unique business service that not only provides creative shipping solutions, but also will make a rubber stamp for you, take your passport photo or provide notary services. The company, which already operates over 110 AIM Mail Centers across 22 states, is planning on adding 30 new locations in each of the next three years and will consider new stores in 44 states.

  • Southern Flavor, Nationwide (12/14/2007)
It has been 66 years since the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opened in Dallas, Texas, but old age hasn’t slowed down the restaurant chain one bit. The company began with the goal of offering “the best-tasting barbecue imaginable,” and continues today with the same recipe that has brought it so much success. Dickey’s serves the same succulent barbecue, but so much more! A catering service, its own barbecue sauce by the bottle and an extended menu have all helped Dickey’s progress with the times.

  • J. Stephens On The March (12/7/2007)
The original plan for the founders of J. Stephens shoes was to open a single store back in 1983. Little did they know how successful they would be; the company owns and operates 26 stores today! The company has grown by employing the simple strategy of providing customers with superior service, an outstanding selection of quality footwear and an amazing value for the money. For the past 24 years, the company has grown due to its reputation of providing professional customer service and maintaining a courteous and knowledgeable sales staff.

  • That's a Wrap! (11/30/2007)
In June, 1998, the first Mega Wraps store opened in Toronto, with the intention of capitalizing on the growing health food trend. Entrepreneur Andy Odeh was banking on the trends continuation, and he was right! Consumers were starting to really take notice of what they were eating, and Wraps Inc. was taking the movement a step further to offer a healthy, high-quality alternative to traditional fast food. The company prides itself on using only the freshest pitas, deli meats and vegetables, creating what it calls a sure winner. Needless to say, the concept took off and the company now operates 71 stores throughout North America.

  • Relax The Back Looking Ahead (11/16/2007)
La Palma, California-based Relax The Back Corporation has been devoted to comforting its clientele since 1984, when it opened its first Relax The Back store. The company’s concept to offer its customers choices that would ease their back pain is unique in the retail world, and everything the company sells in its 112 stores is designed with their mission of ending back pain and preventing it in the future; products include ergonomically-designed desk chairs, mattresses and pillows, as well as instructional DVD’s and books with titles like "The Stretching Book" and "Good News For Backs."

  • Relax The Back Looking Ahead (11/9/2007)
With only 23 years under its belt, Relax The Back Corporation has been successful in a niche that has room for very few. The company hopes to add to this success in the next two years, by adding 20 stores in 2008 and 24 more in 2009. The company will consider adding stores to many states it currently operates in, but will also try to venture into new states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Rhode Island.

  • Bringing Hawaii Home (10/26/2007)
For the first 23 years of its existence, L & L Franchise, Inc. located its L & L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurants solely in Hawaii, denying the population of the U.S. mainland its unique offerings. The company was established in 1976 by entrepreneurs Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores, Jr., when they purchased the old L & L Drive Inn in Honolulu. At first, they were met with hard times before finally figuring out their niche: Hawaiian fast food! The company soon picked up steam and became the most popular Hawaiian fast food restaurant in the state, and began offering franchises in 1988. In 1999 the company finally opened a store on the mainland in California, and patrons hungry for the flavors of Hawaii welcomed them with open arms. As the company continues to grow across the United States, more people are able to truly sample a taste of paradise!

  • Batteries, Plus More Stores (10/18/2007)
The first Batteries Plus store opened in Hartland, Wisconsin in 1988 when the replacement battery industry was changing. Usage of battery chargers and portable battery packs was increasing, and Batteries Plus’ employees were the leading experts in the field at the time. Today, it is evident they still are as Batteries Plus is currently operating over 300 stores, and has almost 100 in development right now. The company is clearly still the leader in battery retail. Batteries Plus stores offer everything from simple watch batteries to replacement battery packs for power tools, vacuums and electric razors.

  • Still Expanding, After All These Years (10/12/2007)
Over 80 years ago, entrepreneur Virginia Draper hardly suspected that the small clothing store she opened would still be around today – and that it would still be growing! In 1927, the world was even more male-dominated than it is today, but Virginia was no ordinary woman. Always full of the entrepreneurial spirit as well as a rigid work ethic, Virginia had her own paper route at age 11 and ran a hotel at 14. The fact that the store she founded is bigger and better than ever before is a testament to her unique business savvy and resounding vision to put excellent customer service at the forefront.

  • Check It Out! (10/5/2007)
Just because a company is the nation’s largest chain of double-drive-thru restaurants doesn’t mean it can sit back and relax, right? Apparently, the folks down at the Checker’s headquarters in Tampa, Florida feel that the company hasn’t quite reached the checkered flag just yet – the 800-store fast food veterans hope to open six to nine stores over the next three years.

  • Stuft, With Room to Grow (9/28/2007)
The Stuft Pizza chain was established 31 years ago with a small, cozy take-out joint in Cerritos, California. In the beginning, Stuft Pizza began operating with the philosophy to offer only the freshest vegetables and meats, finest low-fat cheese and fresh, handmade dough for its pizzas, in order to make the best-tasting pizza around. The company also utilizes ovens resembling Ferris wheels to bake the pies, which help the crust bake evenly. Loyal customers soon began catching on, and in 1978 the company was able to open its second location in Whittier, California. Today, almost thirty years after being deemed one of the top ten pizza joints in Los Angeles County, there are 18 Stuft Pizza stores throughout California and Oregon.

  • C'est Shiekh (9/21/2007)
For the last sixteen years, Ontario, California-based Shiekh Shoes has been on the expansion tip…and doing a great job at it! The company has added an average of six stores per year since it was founded in 1991, and shows no signs of stopping. In fact, it seems as if the company's expansion push has accelerated as time goes on. Since 2003, for example, the company has added more than 40 stores! Shiekh Shoes plans to open five stores in 2008, 10 in 2009, and 15 in both 2010 and 2011.

  • Company Brewing Expansion Plan (9/14/2007)
In an effort to get a share of the retail coffee cake in Seattle, Tom Tully O’Keefe opened the first Tully’s Coffee store in Kent, Washington in 1992. The company’s original strategy involved opening up stores directly next to Starbucks stores. However, 15 years and 130 U.S. stores (and 300 licensed stores in Japan) later, the company has shifted its focus slightly, not concentrating as much on the competition as it is on offering gourmet coffee, espresso, pastries and coffee-making supplies – the things that made it famous in the first place. The company has a huge wholesale department, which puts its brand name on all types of products on grocery store shelves.

  • Got Its MO-JOE Workin', Baby (9/7/2007)
MO-JOE's, Inc. was established in 1984 to bring Buffalo Wings - the gastronomic specialty of upstate New York - to Atlanta. Founders Doug and Marlene Baggett developed their own secret mild, medium, hot, extra-hot, barbecue and lemon pepper sauces to put on the hand-cut chicken wings and the concept was an overnight success. Today, there are 13 Mo-Joe's locations in Georgia which serve not only wings, but hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders and salads, as well as a variety of side dishes, children's items and desserts. Two of the stores are under direct company control, while eleven are franchised.

  • A Company With Good Taste (8/23/2007)
Upon graduating from college in 1983, Jeff Osterfeld visited the East Coast to get new ideas for the store he owned at the time, “Jeff’s Delicatessen” in Dayton, Ohio. It was in Philadelphia where he discovered the public’s fascination with the cheesesteak, and agreed that it was a special sandwich indeed. Jeff introduced his own version of the Philly classic in his own store, and the popularity of the sandwich lent itself to huge sales for Jeff’s Delicatessen. This led to Jeff opening the first Penn Station East Coast Subs restaurant in 1985; he began franchising only two short years later, despite having only four sandwiches on the menu. Today, twenty years after franchising the Penn Station concept, there are over 170 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

  • Data Needs Space, Too (8/17/2007)
Quick Test/Heakin and Quickview locations aren’t your typical mall-based retailer. The company specializes in mall-intercept data collection, which means they collect data from shoppers in the midst of their shopping trips. This very direct research method provides Quick Test’s clients the opportunity to learn about shopper habits and market place trends. The company offers a myriad of services, such as questionnaire design consulting, focus group facilities, data analysis, and much more.

  • Big Plans, Little Gym (8/10/2007)
The very first Little Gym, built in 1976, may not have seemed like a very big deal then, but it has grown to be the largest childrens’ gym franchises in the U.S. today! The company is determined to help parents help their kids get off to a healthy start in life by offering gymnastics classes, motor skill development programs, and even music classes for kids between the ages of 4 months to twelve years old. Little Gym founder Robin Wes incorporated the company and began offering franchises in 1992 and the chain quickly grew. Today, The Little Gym International, Inc. operates 260 stores in most of the fifty states as well as eighteen different countries, and has plans to open up many more in 2008.

  • Kilwin's Sweet Success (8/3/2007)
The sweet success that Kilwin’s has tasted over its sixty-plus years of operation can lend itself to a couple of things; using the finest and freshest of ingredients, upholding strict standards of value and service, and, well, specializing in products that sell themselves! Founded by Don and Katy Kilwin in 1947, the couple went on to operate the chain until 1995 when they sold it to Don and Robin McCarty, who still own the company today.

  • Camille's Appeal (7/27/2007)
Throughout its relatively brief 11-year history, Camille’s Café has been the center of attention in Fast Casual magazine and Entrepreneur magazine, earning top accolades from both.Entrepreneur ranked Camille’s 208 of the top 500 franchises in 2005, and Fast Casual put the chain 13th on its list of hottest fast casual concepts for the same year. More recently, the founder of Camille’s parent company Beautiful Brands International, Inc., David Rutkauskas, was named 2007 Entrepreneurial Success Person of the Year by the Tulsa Metro Chamber. This seems like a lot of recognition for a company that has only been around for eleven years, until you look at its growth rate. The company has added an average of about ten stores per years since its inception.

  • Playing the Expansion Game (7/13/2007)
Knowing that Dunham’s Athleisure Corp. began in 1937 as Dunham's Bait & tackle makes me wonder if anyone foresaw the night crawler and fishhook vendor becoming the sporting goods presence that it is today. With 126 stores spread out among thirteen states in the Midwest and northeast, the company is now one of the largest full-line sporting goods chains in the region. Offering team sports gear, fitness machines, athletic eyewear and casual apparel, Dunham's really has it all.

  • The Cheese Stands Alone (7/6/2007)
The fondue tradition – the cheesy, creamy, and often chocolaty one – has its roots in Switzerland, from when Swiss cow herders began melting old cheese in order to moisten and flavor stale bread in order to sustain themselves during the cold winters. This epicurean curiosity quickly became popular in the royal courts, when servants would melt the best cheese they could find, mix it with wine, and serve it with the house’s finest crusty breads. Fondue is still popular today, as The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc. chain proves. Since 1975, the company has been offering this unique dish to customers who have come to rely on the cozy, relaxing atmosphere The Melting Pot restaurants provide. In fact, The Melting Pot is one of very few restaurants who specialize in this exotic dish and have seemingly cornered the market.

  • No Clownin' Around For Charlie Brown's (6/28/2007)
The Charlie Brown character we have all come to know and love didn't always have the best of luck. Charlie was always getting the short end of the stick, with either Lucy pulling the football away at the last second or his dog Snoopy outsmarting him yet again. His misfortune is in stark contrast to the restaurant chain with the same name, which last week completed the acquisition of RARE Hospitality's Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse.

  • Plans For More Floor & Decor (6/22/2007)
Headquartered in Kennesaw, Georgia, Floor & Decor Outlets of America is a revolutionary concept in the home improvement category, empowering customers with affordable inspiration by providing direct access to the largest inventory of hard flooring products at the most competitive prices, in a welcoming and well-staffed environment. Customers can select, buy and take home flooring on the same day. You might say it’s the next generation in home flooring retail.

  • Oodles of New Stores Planned (6/12/2007)
Way back in 2003, father and son team Daniel and Chris Wencel began experimenting with recycling print toner cartridges. Their goal was to find a way to refill used toner cartridges to work again as good as new, and they invited their own proprietary process to refill the cartridges efficiently, and Caboodle Licensing Corporation was born. Not only does this process help consumers save money on expensive replacement printer toner, but it is also better for the environment to recycle the used cartridges. In four short years, this amazing idea has taken off, and today there are 58 Caboodle Cartridge locations in twenty states, and the company has plans to open more stores in the coming years.

  • Knot Just Pretzels (6/1/2007)
Since 1971, when Gerald Schreiber purchased J & J Pretzel Company at a public auction, the company has been supplying, marketing and distributing its own snack products as well as operating its own stores under the Bavarian Pretzel Bakery, Pretzel Gourmet and Treat Zone banners. The company owns man of the most recognizable snack food brands today. SuperPretzel, ICEE, Minutemaid Frozen Lemonade, Tio Pepe’s Churros and Luigi’s Italian Ice are some of the more famous brands that have propelled parent company J & J Snack Foods Corp. into the multi-million dollar company it is today.

  • A Real Dandy (5/18/2007)
East Hartford, Connecticut-based Aldin Associates, LP has been in the convenience store business for about twenty five years, and has plans to nearly double its number of stores in the next two years. The company began with seven Chucky’s Country Stores, thirty-two gas stations and three Short Stop stores, as well as 7 franchised stores. Today, almost all of the stores have been converted to carry a myriad of convenience products as well as gas. Aldin Associates currently operates twenty-six Chucky’s Food Stores, ten Dandy Donuts stores, and eighteen Wings Over stores.
